Projection 101

Overview

Projection is one of the most technically layered disciplines in live event production, and most technicians approach it by following instructions from someone who actually understands it. This course changes that. Projection 101 covers the full projection workflow over three days: fundamentals and keystone mastery; convergence and Panasonic software; and projection math and edge blending. By the end of the program, participants understand projection as a complete system rather than a collection of steps to follow. The goal is to develop technicians who can walk onto a projection show, assess what needs to happen, and execute it without needing someone to hand them a cheat sheet.

Career Level

Entry Level to Operator: This course is structured to guide participants from foundational knowledge to advanced projection workflows over three progressive days. Day one is accessible to technicians newer to projection; day three reaches operator-level complexity.

What You'll Learn

Day 1: Fundamentals and Keystone Mastery. Upon completion of Day 1, participants will be able to:

• Understand projector types, lens selection, and throw distance calculation.

• Position and align a projector correctly for a given screen and room setup

• Apply keystone correction with precision and understand when and why to use it.

• Trace signal flow through a complete projection system.

• Set up and verify a clean, stable projected image.

Day 2: Convergence and Panasonic Software. Upon completion of Day 2, participants will be able to:

• Execute geometric correction and convergence on Panasonic projectors.

• Navigate Panasonic projector software to configure and control the system.

• Understand multi-projector setup principles and display management.

• Identify and resolve alignment issues in a multi-projector environment

Day 3: Projection Math and Edge Blending. Upon completion of Day 3, participants will be able to:

• Apply projection math to plan throw distance, lens selection, and screen coverage.

• Set up and calibrate edge blends across multiple projectors.

• Troubleshoot blend line issues and uniformity problems.

• Build a complete multi-projector system from planning through final alignment.

A Day in Class

All three days are hands-on with full projection hardware: six Panasonic projectors and media servers. Each day builds directly on the previous one, with structured exercises that move participants through progressively complex scenarios. Instructors guide each stage of the process and review participant work directly, with feedback focused on alignment accuracy, decision logic, and the professional approach to working with high-value production equipment.

What You Leave With

Participants receive an AVE Projection 101 certificate of completion and a projection planning reference guide covering throw calculations, lens selection, and the blend setup workflow. Participants leave with three days of hands-on projection experience and the system-level understanding to approach projection work with real confidence.

Reducing Risk

Projection errors on a show are expensive and highly visible: misaligned images, poor blends, incorrect lens choices, and signal issues that eat into setup time and reflect poorly on the production team. A technician who understands projection as a system makes better decisions at every stage, from planning through execution, and resolves problems faster when they arise on site.
