Introduction to Show Calling

Overview

Show calling is one of the most communication-intensive roles in live event production. The person on the headset calling the show sets the pace, protects the timeline, and keeps every department coordinated in real time. This course builds the language, workflow, and command presence needed to do that job well. Participants work through real cue-calling scenarios, practice headset communication under pressure, and develop script-management habits that separate reactive show callers from operators who run the room.

Career Level

Entry Level to Mid-Level: This course is the starting point for anyone stepping into show calling for the first time or looking to formalize skills developed on the job. No prior calling experience is required.

A Day in Class

This is an active, simulation-driven class. Participants spend the majority of the day practicing: calling cues aloud, managing scripts under timed pressure, and working through scenarios drawn from real corporate and live event productions. Guided practice is followed by instructor feedback on communication style, decision timing, and cue accuracy. You will call things wrong in this class. That is the point. Mistakes here cost nothing; mistakes on site do.

What You Leave With

Participants receive the AVE Introduction to Show Calling Certification from AV Educate. This credential reflects demonstrated competency in foundational show-calling workflows and communication standards. Participants also leave with a personal cue script template and reference materials for continued practice.

Reducing Risk

An unprepared show caller creates cascading problems: late cues, missed transitions, confused departments, and a production that feels out of control even when the technical elements are solid. Trained show callers protect the flow of the event, keep every team member on the same page, and respond to last-minute changes without losing the room.
