Real World Audio Fundamentals

Instructor: Hannah Herzog

This audio console training is a hands on, training designed to teach audio the way it’s actually used on show site. Led by Hannah Herzog, the class blends core audio theory with real world execution because understanding why something works is what allows you to fix it when it doesn’t.

We start with the fundamentals that every audio tech must understand, then immediately apply them through practical drills that mirror live event workflows.

Core Foundations Covered

Before touching advanced tools, we lock in the fundamentals that everything else depends on:

  • What Is Sound?
Understanding sound as energy not magic and how it behaves in rooms.

  • What Is Signal Flow?
Learning how audio moves from source to speaker, so you can trace problems instead of guessing.

  • Cables vs Wireless
When to choose each, common failure points, and how to troubleshoot both under pressure.

  • The Importance of Gain Structure
Building clean, consistent levels from mic to output and the difference between “loud” and “clear.”

  • What Causes Feedback?
Understanding feedback as a system problem, not a panic moment.

  • Understanding Frequencies
How frequency ranges affect speech, music, clarity, and fatigue and how to control them.

These concepts are reinforced continuously throughout the day, not taught once and forgotten.
